Wednesday's Art College Symposium was one to be remembered. I learned a lot about what to expect and what would be expected of me in art school. I personally have some interest in applying to art school in my senior year and I also have always had an interest in studying architecture in college, so overall, this symposium was perfect for me to start thinking about what I want to get serious about. From what I heard during this lunchtime lecture, applying to art school is a good idea even if you have the slightest interest in art, and that these interests could be brought out to be pursued in art school. It is a chance to branch out, challenge yourself, and explore different practices to find what you want to focus on, which is something that I though I had to have done by high school, so it was somewhat of a relief to hear this. Another point that I gathered from this discussion was that at Maggie L. Walker, these art classes are actually really advanced compared to the education that other students in the country that will be attending these colleges don’t have access to (unfortunately). The alumni were talking about how advanced they felt when they first started classes, which is really important to me because, coming to MLWGS, I felt really behind in everything and I would like to not feel this way when I get to college. I also liked listening to the architecture student talk about his experiences because that is my realistic aspiration. I learned from him that architecture class gives a lot of direction and allows for a creative outlet while also providing guidelines, which is really comforting to me. Overall, this lecture was comforting and also has me thinking about where I want to go with my art.o
